When Best Friends Build a Conscious Fashion Label
February 15, 2026 – Nilam India
Some businesses begin with spreadsheets and pitch decks. Nilam India began with a 15-year-old friendship.
Founders Sabin Kumar and Sanghamitra Ghosh met as students while pursuing their BMM (Bachelor of Mass Media) from Mumbai University, later continuing together with an MBA from Symbiosis University. What followed were separate professional paths but a shared dream that never faded.
While Sanghamitra returned to Dehradun to work closely with her family's legacy in block printing and handcrafted textiles, Sabin built his career leading marketing functions across corporate organisations. Years passed, but conversations about building something meaningful together always resurfaced casually.
In 2023, those conversations became serious. Sanghamitra wanted to take her family-run, community-based craft label beyond Dehradun and into the online, pan-India space without losing its soul. That's when both decided to take the leap. Sabin resigned from his corporate role in December 2023, and together they began shaping what would soon become Nilam India.
A Shared Vision, a Shared Journey
Many believe best friends shouldn't start businesses together. Sabin sees it differently, "Best friends make ideal business partners. There's instant trust, chemistry, and a shared goal. You already know each other's strengths and weaknesses and that clarity becomes your biggest advantage."
Sanghamitra echoes the same belief, adding that trust and communication form the backbone of any long-term venture. "There will be heated moments in business, but understanding intention, purpose, and keeping communication open is very important. Once things settle, you should still be able to share a cup of chai, laugh on random things and obviously get back to work, that ease is rare with many."
Today, Nilam India is steadily earning trust as one of India's promising new-age conscious fashion labels. In 2025, the brand was recognised by Grazia India as a conscious fashion brand and featured by Mid-Day as one of the "Next Big Brands of India."
Crafting a Conscious Future
Focused on comfortable, thoughtfully crafted clothing for urban women, Nilam India works closely with artisans from rural India. While block printing remains its core craft, the brand is gradually expanding into techniques like Ajrakh, hand dyes, and Chikankari creating space for traditional crafts to grow within modern wardrobes.
"Our goal is to create a sustainable, circular fashion ecosystem that empowers rural artisans and celebrates India's rich textile heritage," says Sanghamitra. "We work directly with communities, ensuring fair wages and constant working conditions.
Nilam India's collections feature 100% AZO-free dyes and 100% cotton fabrics. The brand also prioritises minimal waste, with a focus on low wastage inventory models.
Building a Movement, One Garment at a Time
At its heart, Nilam India isn't just a fashion label. It's a reminder that when trust, friendship, and purpose come together, businesses can be built slowly and last longer.
"We're not in a race to be the biggest or the fastest, Slow Fashion takes time, patience, and a deep commitment to your values." says Sabin.
Nilam India's growth has been organic, driven by a loyal community of customers who resonate with the brand's ethos. The founders believe this grassroots approach is key to building a sustainable, long-term business.
"Every garment we create has a story of the artisan who crafted it, the community it supports, and the values it represents," Sanghamitra adds. "We want our customers to feel that connection, to understand the impact of their choices. That's what will drive real, lasting change in the fashion industry."
As Nilam India continues to evolve, the founders remain focused on their original vision: to create a fashion label that celebrates India's rich textile heritage, empowers rural communities, and inspires a new generation of conscious consumers.
